A distinctive feature of GNU / Linux is the versatility. There are distributions that are perfect for the desktop, others that are the best for specific uses, and many that fit the machine on which to run.
There are several distributions of GNU/Linux called light distros, and which are specially designed to run on old computers, often obsolete hardware, and that would otherwise be thrown away.
So here's an overview of the most popular distributions that you can use to exploit the power of GNU/Linux on your old PC.
* Damn Small Linux: DSL supports only x86 PCs. The minimum system requirements are a 486 processor and 8 MB of RAM. It uses Fluxbox DE
* Puppy Linux: It require 48 MB of ram memory, ed it uses the JWM Window Manager. * DeLi Linux: needs a 386 with 32 MB RAM as a minimum. However, a Linux Swap partition needs to be selected during setup to run DeLi with less than 48 MB RAM. It should work smoothly with a 486. A full installation with all packages requires nearly 750 MB of hard disk space.* Lubuntu: the lightest version of Ubuntu, it uses the Lxde DE.
* Antix: the light version of Mepis. * Sam Linux: based on PCLinuxOS, it uses the Xfce DE.
