Free as in Freedom
Hello everybody,
at the beginning of 2007 microsoft brought out as usual its operating system full of bugs and flaws, but this time with much more bad-increase than the past because it will work only on powerful pcs, it takes a lot of disk space and limit strongly user's Freedom! windows is the only system that virus,trojan,spy-ware etc..are made for, the only through which they steal your msn account..the only that needs antivirus and expensive software, microsoft imposes to people its windows and they must adjust to it, while the other Free operating systems are evolving more quickly depending on user's requests.
Replacement Common Windows applications exist for GNU/Linux like emule, msn etc..
Many games exist directly for GNU/Linux penguin while the others can be executed with an emulator called cedega that absolutely doesn't remove anything in the game.
As a first step, you can install GNU/Linux alongside Windows on the same computer. Later, once you get used to GNU/Linux, you can delete Windows. I suggest to install GNU/Linux especially for these reasons:
WINDOWS: - it makes your pc go slowly
- it takes up a lot of hard disk's space
- it takes up a lot of ram memory
- you must buy expensive components for working with it properly
- it's the only operating system that has virus written for the common user
- it's the only operating system that has spy-ware, trojan etc.
- it needs anti-virus , anti-spyware and all the other expensive and heavy softwares
- it hasn't a managment system for the root user, actually anybody can install what s/he wants (malm-ware included)
- it costs A LOT OF MONEY!!!
- microsoft compels you (at least you self-build your pc) to have its operating system when you buy the pc
- it closes economy in an arrogant and wrong monopoly
- it aims at limiting user's freedom for sly reasons
GNU/LINUX: - it makes your pc go quickly exploiting to the best
- it takes up little hard disk's space
- it takes up little ram memory
- it works good with old systems too
- it's immune to most viruses and trojan horses
- it doesn't need antivirus or any additional security software, and it has a very powerful firewall integrated in the kernel Linux
- it has a complex and efficient security system and permission to install software and manage the system being sure that nobody will corrupt our operating system
- to install the programms you can start the package-manager, write the programm's name, and the system will download it directly from your distro's server and install it on your pc, putting the relative voice on the application menu order by type (office,graphics,multimedia,development...) unlike win that puts it badly
- to do the system-upgrade you can perform it by using internet, and on the reboot you will find the same programms and settings, icons, msn's avatars, emule credits and the all other things
- it's so graphically nice and it has wonderful effects light for the o.s. that win tries to emulate right now badly, taking a lot of memory
- it's supported by the world community and reiceve continuous updating and improvement
- it's free software so you can change it how you want, you can make it modified by other people, distributing it everybody you want, re-distributing it with the changes done
- it's the emblem of FREEDOM and opposite to windows, it changes depending on people's request, while microsoft imposes to users to submit to their closed-software
- it's Free (freedom) and for free ($)
If GNU/Linux was utilized in all public administrations' office and in the school we would spare something like bilions of dollars, that now we are spending (because the taxes are payed by us) for the microsoft's licences for all those expensive proprietary software (that with GNU/Linux is free and gratis) among which antivirus' licences etc..
Governments will have to be forced to use Free Software in the public offices and especially in schools, where the knowledge must be shared, guys have the right to be taught to free software, so why make people evolve depends on something that makes economy permanently poor (microsoft)?
In the underdeveloped nations the Free Software is the only way to develop; the governements instead of throwing money away with the licences could use the same money to do something really useful for their population that is starving instead of giving it to Bill Gates.
In Brazil in fact since 2004 the whole system in public offices has been using free software for this kind of reason: macroeconomy, security, technologic autonomy, indipendence to monopoly, sharing and development of knowledge.
The Free Software represents a very big resource for a nation, a closed-software is a software not safe because we can't really control its behaviour and we haven't the control over it , the trasparency that is fundamental for the security.
Beyond the fact that GNU/Linux is technologically higher, the real and ideologic matter is the free software, not proprietary, that gives the freedom to users and it makes us good citizens (as Richard Stallman said) sharing the software and helping our neighbor.
With the Free Software we have the freedom to get, distribute to others, share, change the programmes depending on our own need and redistribute it with the improvements done. If the software is free we are not tied to a monopoly, but we are free having source code and being able to choose the developers that we want for potential changes and development. The information technology is a common asset and no entity can take and close it, the software has always been open since the beginning, until microsoft has invented closed-licence closing the source code, and imprisoning the people.
Do you think to be FREE?
On Server-side in fact GNU/Linux has no rival because the 70% of world server use GNU/Linux for the security and freedom and when there are big capitals invested, a clown-microsoft full of bug is not the uttermost..we need only to give freedom to those desktop users that are not already.
You can download Ubuntu, that is a version (distribution) of GNU/Linux very nice and user-friendly for desktop with this link.
And here there is the respective guide to make your desktop very nice and configured depending on your need.
I suggest to new users to use Ubuntu because it has an installer really user-friendly and because it is the distro of the moment.
Other distros very simple to install and use are Mandriva, Suse, PCLinuxOS or Dream Linux.
Then there are the distro for expert like Slackware or Gentoo but, if not to study them, I not suggest you them if you're a beginner.
However at the level where GNU/Linux is, nowadays it is much easier to use a any GNU/Linux distribution that windows
So Free Penguin collect a lot of resources that I suggest you to consult: the section Free Penguin Guide full of guide, how to, tutorial and so many more Tips & Tricks, the section of the web-site dedicated to community: Free Penguin Cafè, meeting point with forum, chat, guestBook, tagboard, polls for wonder or question, Free Penguin Download section where you can directly download distro, applications and resource concerned Free Software, the News of GNU/Linux area, and the section Desktop full Icons, Avatar, Wallpaper etc.!!
Long life to freedom!!
